7A-Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1
Hypothesis: Many college students don't know how to cook and are too broke, lazy, or busy to learn.
Interviews
- Lainey (20): Lainey found that this was true because she finds herself cooking the same foods over and over again. A service that is cheap, local, convenient, and quick would help. Because she doesn't know a lot of recipes she isn't very motivated to cook anything outside of her staples. Lainey also thinks that learning new recipes would be expensive and time-consuming.
- Jane (20): Jane said that she agrees but she doesn't believe that it applies to her. She doesn't learn how to cook because she doesn't like to try new foods. She's fine with cooking the same stuff so she doesn't think that the statement applies.
- Gerald (21): Gerald said that he agrees because he sees his roommates cooking the same pasta dishes every night and when he offers to help them cook something different they refuse. He thinks that they won't try cooking something new because they're too tired from the rest of their day to cook something too complex.
- Houston (24): Houston agrees but doesn't think that it applies to him or his roommates. He views it more as a blanket statement. He and his roommates use cooking as a way to bond and hang out after a long day. He likes learning new things in the kitchen and thinks that it's relaxing. But he recognizes that his experience is not the same for everyone.
- Bill (60): Bill said that as someone who is well past college, he knows that in his experience he never really learned how to cook. In college, he either ate out or cooked instant meals. This has had a lasting effect on him because not learning in college meant that he still doesn't really know how to cook.
Summary
I believe that my original statement still stands. Many college students don't know how to cook. While the reasons for not cooking may vary the statement still stands
With your interview pool diverse in different aspects, I see the standing of your original hypothesis as to the issue of college students not knowing how to cook or either too busy in order to learn can still apply afterwards. I wonder if some of this cause from the location of living during our time at college, due to dorm versus apartment living.
ReplyDeleteI thought your opportunity was well thought out, and the interviews definitely show that your idea has potential. I totally relate to the struggles of cooking the same meals over and over such as pasta or frozen meals. It is especially hard to gain knowledge and experience being in a dorm or something of that nature which is why many college students struggle with this problem.
